Old vs. New

There is a vast difference between the modern and the aged … the skin of a young bride and the creases that tell a lifetime of stories.

We believe beauty is in fresh-faced, blushed skin void of any blemish, wrinkle or look of wear.  This started me thinking:  Why do we yet find such beauty in pieces that are worn, misshapen and baring their souls and scars?

There is a truth in the rough surfaces.

So why don’t we find the same in ourselves? Why do we feel we need to be “fixed,” repaired, do better, be more, do more…?

The older I get, the more I lean into the rough edges and fractured pieces in myself.

The comparing, doubting, thinking I should do more, be more, have more … but at the end of the day, I’m grateful for the challenges and roadblocks that have scarred, wounded and worn my crisp edges down a bit.

This … after all, this makes us who we are, and how we see the world.

It’s that place within us all that lends the gift of insight, compassion, clarity, wisdom and patience (on this I am still a student).

So cheers to the imperfect and all the works-in-progress:  Embrace, accept and get on with it!
